Description

One of the most interesting debates that we have seen in recent times is whether PMP is best or ITIL? While people have their own opinions, it is a serious question for individuals who are opting for such courses and are confused. Below are the differences that one can see in these two courses and then select accordingly.

Cost Containment Or Revenue Generation?

While ITIL focuses more on cost containment, PMP is more about revenue generation. As the name suggests, cost containment means doing a project with a low budget. ITIL focuses more on doing a project with less wastage. People who are want to provide results by using fewer budgets for projects are advised to take up the ITIL courses. It would help the person in knowing where to invest money and how to save money on projects. It helps in saving money and still being able to do great projects.

On the other hand, PMP focuses more on revenue generation. It focuses more on IT strategy and design and not on IT operations. Here, the main focus of the team is to generate revenue. The role of the project manager is to generate the revenue of the company by doing valuable projects. in simple language, the role of the project manager is to make critical decisions which will help the business is booming. At the same time, the ITIL expert will act as the Subject Matter Expert who can cut down the costs of the projects and handle them effectively.

Exciting Career Or Secure Career?

Some people want to have a secure career while some need adventures in their life. While people who have done ITIL will get jobs based on short term contracts for some years, the PMP experts are hired for a long term basis.

From the above statement, one can clearly say that the job of the PMP expert is one of the most secure jobs in the industries, whereas the job of an ITIL expert includes regular shifting of companies. However, it depends upon personal choices. While it is highly advised that young people should take up an exciting career as it would help them in knowing the various forms of the industries and would help them in learning various things, it is their personal choice if they want to settle down at such an age.

One can experience an exciting career by taking up a course in ITIL as it would help the person in knowing how to adapt with changing technologies, how to shift from one company to another and how to mix up with people. It would further help the person in strengthening up their soft skills, as they would have to change jobs and appear for interviews continuously. Moreover, the job of a project manager, who has done PMP is mainly sticking to one company only. Companies do not hire PMP experts for a short term basis as they know that PMP certified people are highly useful. Hence, PMP certified people get long term contracts, and they get stuck to one company only.

Which One To Select?

As a beginner, it is suggested to take up the ITIL course, as it would help the person in getting a grasp on the fundamentals of project management and all those things. Moreover, ITIL is an area where one can continuously improve by taking up the courses. There are beginner’s courses, intermediate and even advance courses. Another benefit of taking up ITIL is that this is a one-time course and a person does not have to give the exams from time to time to get their certificates.

On the other hand, PMP is the highest level of professional exams, and the certificate is only valid for 2 to 3 years. One has to appear for the exams continuously to keep up with their certificates as well as their contracts. Moreover, PMP is a course which one should do after getting a strong hand in the basic courses.

Both PMP and ITIL are different courses but with the same motive. It teaches the person how to manage various things in a project in IT industries or some other companies. Both the courses are available on the internet and one can easily lookup for these courses and then select which course to take.
